Media: Ink and Watercolor

Vision: The four pictures on this page are drawings using ink and watercolors. I am fascinated by mixing my media to achieve different effects. Although I also enjoy painting with oils and acrylics, I occasionally get in the mood to experiment with the tiny details that can be achieved using fine ink pens and subtly filling in color with watercolors. Due to my late husband’s obsession with all things Egyptian (being a history professor), I became fascinated with drawing Egyptian statues. The use of ink to achieve the deep crevices, cracks and shadows in the ancient stones gives tremendous dimension to the drawing. The fourth drawing is of one of our local desert petroglyphs, again using ink and watercolors.

Smith3.jpg Painting #1 is of the great Abu Simbel statues and is 24”X36”. These statues are 33 feet tall and carved in the rock of the cliff. These were dedicated by Ramesses II to his wife Nofretari.

Painting #2 is the statue Hathor and is 11”X14”. The goddess Hathor’s portrait adorning the capitals in the mammisi at Philae. Her “cow ears” are clearly visible.

Painting #3 is a statue of Ramesses II and is 18”X24”. The full statue is 82 feet tall and is carved into the sandstone cliff.

Painting #4 is local petroglyphs and is 14”X18”. We are fortunate to have these ancient drawings in several locations nearby our desert town of Ridgecrest.
